Dodgeball champions crowned

One gym, eight teams, and many spherical projectiles: all of the ingredients of a battle to crown Stow’s dodgeball champion.
The annual dodgeball tournament was held Feb. 11, 2015 in the main gym. It was a night filled with energy, loud music and for many teams, disappointment.

Student Council put together this year’s dodgeball tournament in hopes of another successful event, much like the last. Word must have spread, as this year’s event was a great success.

β€œThis was by far a better turnout than last year. We’ve raised more than three-hundred dollars that will all be donated to charity, which makes putting the tournament together much more worth it,” senior and Student Council President Allie Laber said.

With three courts of grueling dodgeball matches going on at once, the action was endless, and the energy was intense, as teams rose up in tournament play and others were sent home.

β€œEveryone seems to be having a lotΒ of fun. I like seeing how competitive and excited everyone can get during the games. I certainly wouldn’t be out there though,” Laber said.

The brutality of the game and simplicity of the rules makes dodgeball fun to watch, but hard to strategize a victory plan. Some teams had no game plan, which worked for few but proved fatal for many. The Purple Cobras were not unprepared as they came ready to play with a game plan.

β€œWe’re just going to dodge, dip, dive, duck and dodge, and we should be good,” senior Purple Cobras team member Andrew Groves said.

β€œIt’s all about catching balls and dodging balls,” junior We Can Dodge A Wrench team member Owen Fankhauser said, after a clutch victory over Groves and The Purple Cobras.

In the end, only one team was able to rise to victory. The final match was set between The Purple Cobras and Mixed Blitz, and the winner would take home the title of dodgeball champion for 2015.

This year’s trophy went to Mixed Blitz, as they defeated The Purple Cobras in a

hard-fought match of dodgeball. Members of Mixed Blitz and the dodgeball champions of 2015 were juniors Joe Reitz, Alex Fur- long, Dakota Storm, Derek Bueno, Frankie Peck, Logan Emery, Joe Wheeler and Scott Swango.

β€œIt was a tough fight, but we got the job done and got it all in the end,” Peck said after the final victory.

This year’s success will hopefully be surpassed by next year as more teams try to take the title away from this year’s victors and be crowned the champions of dodgeball.

Wheeler said,” It was a lot fun, definitely a team effort, and we’re going to come back next year and take it home again.”

Bon Iver fills the room with poetic melodies

Few bands or solo artists today can make listeners feel as if they are the steady snowfall on Christmas Eve. Bon Iver; however, has this technique mastered

DeYarmond was the name of the band that lead singer and songwriter Justin Vernon played in before Bon Iver. Vernon played with high school friends, but after they relocated to North Carolina, everything had fallen apart.

Altmusic.com said Vernon felt out of place, so he broke up with his band, broke up with his girlfriend and headed back to his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. While searching for himself, naturally, he found haven in a log cabin in the woods where he wrote songs for months.

When Vernon left the cabin, he emerged with his first album called β€œFor Emma, Forever Ago.” The album was released in 2008 and is filled with soft, haunting sounds.

β€œI crouch like a crow contrast with the snow for the agony I would rather know,” Vernon, in his song β€œBlindsided”, wrote.

His voice throughout the entirety of the album is beautiful. Vernon has a calm, yet powerful tone that can put anyone to sleep, but still make them think about their life at the same time.

β€œFor Emma, Forever Ago” is full of heartbreak, which makes the album even more significant. Vernon puts his heart on the line for every song he writes and the extreme poetic words of his writing flow perfectly together.

β€œI was full by your count. Lost, but your fool. Was a long visit wrong?” Vernon sang in β€œCreature Fear.”

Most people, at least teenagers, are familiar of the song β€œSkinny Love” covered by Birdy. The cover of the song is beautiful, but the original is written by Bon Iver and comes packed with a sound no other artist can produce.

β€œTell my love to wreck it all. Cut out all the ropes and let me fall,” Vernon hauntingly sings in β€œSkinny Love.”

The second album released is called β€œBlood Bank.” Released in 2009, the album is shorter and follows β€œFor Emma, Forever Ago” almost perfectly.

Vernon competes with his own lyrics, writing the songs in β€œBlood Bank” even more powerfully than before. Some songs are open for any interpretation, but others are very black and white.

β€œWhen you are out, tell your lucky one to know that you will leave. Don’t you look when you’re fleeing. I’d like not to hear keys,” Vernon sang in β€œBeach Baby.”

The way he writes brings imagination to the listener, making them feel like they are in the situation or forcing them to relive a past experience all over again.

β€œAnd I said I knew it well, the secret that you know but don’t know how to tell,” Vernon sings in β€œBlood Bank.”
Sadly, the most recent album released by Bon Iver was β€œBon Iver” in 2011. This album, thankfully, is much longer than the other two.

Vernon, again, does not disappoint listeners as he belts out ballads with the same, if not more, amount of power and relaxation. He writes songs about truth, but delivers them in such a way no other artist can.

β€œAt once I knew I was not magnificent,” Vernon, in β€œHolocene”, sang. β€œHigh above the highway aisle, jagged vacance and thick with ice, I could see for miles, miles, miles.”

When listening to all three of the albums, the feeling of sorrow and happiness hits listeners like a tidal wave. If there was an award for most poetic song filled with powerful music in the background, Bon Iver, without question, would win.

Vernon sings in β€œTowers,” β€œOpen ears and open eyes, wake up to your starboard bride who goes in and then stays inside. Oh the demons, they can subside.”

Jade’s February favorites revealed

That’s right, it is February: it is the 28 days of the year consisting of hot wings, roses and candy hearts.

This month holds many trademark events and desserts. From the delicious candy to the feelings brought from the words β€œSuper Bowl” and β€œValentine’s Day,” February definitely reminds students of some of their favorite things.

Feb. 1 was a memorable day for all New England Patriot fans. Winning by only four points, Super Bowl parties all around were either crushed by the slight loss or enthusiastic from the victory.

The Super Bowl is one of those events that brings friends and families together with the fire of debate on who the best team is, excitement for victory and a little dash of comedy with each new commercial.

My favorite commercial this year was for Mountain Dew Kickstart. The dancing dog and couch made for a very weird yet comical commercial.

Although the entertainment on Super Bowl day is what excited most people, I get pumped for the food. With the selection of mini hot dogs, chili and chip dip, one could never go wrong.

Thirteen days later is yet again another favorite day in February.

This day is surely a favorite for all of those elementary students who get to buy those cute, little cards and make their own decorated tissue box. Back in the day, that Valentine’s day party in class was one of the best days of the year because any day that you could receive chocolate in the second grade, was a great day.

Now-a-days, we may want fancier sweets from Malley’s or Edible Arrangements.

Malley’s is a favorite of mine, definitely around this time of the year. With a new location in Stow, you could buy your loved one a heart shaped box of chocolate or their famous chocolate strawberries without having to go very far. Their chocolate covered pretzels and strawberries are my absolute favorite item in the store. Just down the road from the high school, 3027 Graham Road, the new Malley’s is sure to have something for everyone on Valentine’s day or any other special occasion.

Just a few miles further into Stow is yet another marvelous place to shop for your valentine.

Edible Arrangements has quite a different selection for your partner. They offer baskets of all different kinds of fruit, which may seem boring; however, they take it a step further than just an ordinary basket of fruit.

Edible Arrangements takes the pineapple, strawberry, grape and cantaloupe combination and turns them into a beautiful creation. Each basket resembles a bouquet of flowers, with the fruit pieces shaped like individual flowers. They are stunning to look at and are even better to eat. Your valentine would definitely not turn down a basket of glorious, high quality arranged fruit. Edible Arrangement is located at 4326 Kent Rd, in the plaza by 5 Below.

On the more traditional side of Valentine’s day are candy hearts. Some have a burning hate towards these little candies; however, some people, like me, love them. The tiny pastel colored hard candies with the cute sayings on them is one of my favorite parts of February. My favorite color of the selection is orange. Usually only being available within this month, candy hearts are like gold. Those who love the little hearts must stock up now, because before we know it, it will be March and one step closer to spring time.

Woodland hosts carnival for students

The staff of Woodland Elementary joined together with PTSA to host a fun, family-friendly dance on Feb. 11.

The dance included a variety of activities for students, parents and teachers to enjoy. In the art room, volunteers from the high school’s National Honors Society chapter painted faces and oversaw board games as well as helped sell pizza, tickets and water.

The gymnasium was decorated with festive banners and lights to create a fun dancing space where the kids could dance. There was also a DJ to help emcee the event as well as lead the dances like The Cupid Shuffle. At one point during the night, there was also a school-wide limbo contest.

Spike the Bulldog also made a special appearance during the night. While he was mostly seen over by the music room taking pictures and in the hallway giving high-fives, Spike also helped lead everyone in dancing The Cotton Eyed Joe and The Cha-Cha Slide.

β€œI’m really glad the PTSA and teachers helped put this event together,” said senior Courtney Herring. β€œI remember when I used to go to these things when I was [in elementary school], and now I realize how much [effort] it takes to put something like this together.”

The volunteers that helped with the event, both student and parent, rarely had a chance to stand still. Chaperones had to keep a close eye to make sure every event ran smoothly.

β€œI’ve been a part of Student Council for awhile, so planning dances and organizing committees is nothing new to me,” senior Brittany Lytton said. β€œOf course, when you’re working with really little kids, it adds a whole new dimension to things. I think it’s funny how [at the high school] the biggest problem is how many people are grinding. At [Woodland],Β  the biggest problem is people screaming in the hallway.Β  I was supposed to be giving away tickets for a free raffle, but most of my time was spent telling kids to use their inside voices unless they were in the gymnasium.”

Despite all of the time, energy, and effort it takes to organize the family dances, the effort always seems worth in the end.

β€œThese dances really take it out of you, but when you see the kids get excited about pizza or games or something like that, [it is] worth it,” senior Molly Divine said.

Memories are being created as well as aΒ  stronger community. Woodland and PTSA, as well as the other elementary schools, look forward to organizing more fun events like these in the future.
