General public to blame for athletes’ high salaries

It is a pretentious person’s favorite thing to say, β€œathletes get paid way too much; all they do is play a game and make millions. It is not fair.”

This may be true. According to businessinsider.com, an average professional basketball player’s salary is $5.15 million a year.

This is an enormous amount of money to play a child’s recreational game. 5.15 million dollars seems monstrous compared to payscale.com’s average yearly salary for a police officer at $56,130. An adult who risks his/her life to protect the law abiding citizens of the United States makes 8% of what an NBA player makes. Something is wrong here.

People wonder who to blame for this. They have no one to blame but themselves. The general public is the only one responsible.

The general public are the ones who pay $110 for a Joe Haden jersey. They let Nike tell them a pair of Lebron James basketball shoes are worth $250.

All of that money is not directly pocketed by Nike or whatever brand is selling it. Athletes are endorsed by companies, getting paid by the company for the athlete to wear their products and the company in turn can use their name for products or even commercials.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant was recently offered $265-$285 million over 10 years by Under Armor.

Someone’s name and image should not be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. This is only able to happen because people are willing to pay whatever price the corporations say they will pay.

It seems like a big cycle to me. Athletes start new trends and then the big corporations will sell that trend and make huge profit off the new style, thus increasing the corporation’s profit and their ability to pay athletes these huge endorsements. Β

Overpaid athletes have only the chumps overpaying for brand-name apparel to thank for their enormous salary.

DECA creates new atmosphere through DECA Week

By Bayley Patterson

DECA is a marketing club that students compete in different business categories. Junior and seniors have the ability to learn about marketing in a fun and interactive way.

β€œI just started this year as a senior, and I wish I started last year. You learn a lot about marketing and business, and we have speakers and go on cool field trips too,” senior Madie Mills said.

Lisa Mowls has been in charge of DECA for 16 years.

This week DECA is holding a β€˜DECA Week.’ Every year in November, Mowls picks a week to participate. This week is created to potentially acquire new DECA members. It is also to spread the news of what DECA is and what members achieve.

Every day, DECA members have to tweet something depending on the day. Every day will have a different theme.

On Monday, DECA representatives had to wear DECA spirit wear and a pin. They also had to tweet out a motivational message.

β€œI think it gave Stow’s DECA a positive vibe. It shows how we want to be successful, and by tweeting it, everyone else can see it as well. Hopefully, it can positively impact another student’s day and influence others to strive for greatness,” senior Madi Baughman said.

On Tuesday, members had to wear clothes to represent the country or flag. Juniors had to tweet a picture of themselves with a poster, and seniors had to post a picture with a map. Members all chose a country to represent because they are learning about international business along with business in the United States.

Wednesday, members participated in β€˜Well-ΒGroomed Wednesday.’ They had to dress nicely and tweet a picture with the β€˜DECA Diamond.’ Stow DECA representatives went to Joshua’s for a junior achievement meeting where different business workers will talk with the DECA members.

On Thursday, DECA representatives are required to wear the given black business polo for the class. They also have to tweet a fact about the Mali/Stow school DECA is creating.

β€œI’m excited to have an opportunity to help people outside of our community. The school in Mali will give children a chance to receive a good education,” junior Kaely Montgomery said.

Friday, DECA members will be participating in the usual Stow spirit.

Mills said, β€œI love DECA week because we get to do a bunch of things to help get the word out about DECA and raise awareness about who we are and what we do.”

Millennials losing interest in voting

It seems as if the current generation of U.S. citizens who are newly eligible to vote on issues and in elections have an extreme lack of interest in actually voting.

Millennials are considered to be anyone who reached the age of adulthood near the year 2000, and they are a big category of people to win over during elections and voting times.

A Harvard survey revealed nearly one out of three millennials did not believe that running for any type of position, including president, in the government was an honorable thing to do.

Additionally, two out of three surveyed believed politicians only run for selfish reasons and they do not really want to help the American people.

One of the many theories said to have started the lack of interest in politics in general is the Obama presidency.

Obama’s presidential campaign called out for change and reforms which many millennials do not believe were carried through; therefore, causing a lack of faith and desire to put in the effort to vote again.

Another theory is millennials have a feeling of hopelessness when it comes to America and reforming it to what they would like it to be.

β€œI don’t think anything could really get me to change my mind about voting. Maybe when I’m 18, but I doubt it,” junior Ethan Myers from Hudson High School said.

The majority of millennials believe there is nothing they can do to change anything about how America currently is and it causes them to lose interest in anything related to politics.

β€œI feel like I should be [interested in politics], because it has such a big impact on my country, but I’m not. I feel that I don’t have that large of an impact on my country when I vote,” Myers said.

Mid-term elections specifically seem to be the lowest interest to millennials. In 2010, only 21% of the people who voted were age 18-24.

Historically, there has never been in time in any country’s government that has had more young people vote more than their elders.

While youth votes have never been plenty, the past few years has resulted in major decreases in youth voting throughout the world in general.

The usual excuse people use is millennials are just β€œtoo lazy” to get out in vote, but that is not actually the case. Millennials volunteer more than their elders, and they are less likely to drink excessively or use drugs and are much better educated than their older companions.

Another theory of why millennials are lacking an interest in politics is their lack of connections and caring about the things going on around them.

In 1970, the average women married and settled down before she was 21, causing her and her husband to care about schools and hospitals and things of that nature because it affects their children.

Now, women wait on average to get married and settle down until they are 26 which means the 18-24 bracket of voters do not have the family ties to pull their interest into politics.

Millennials do not care about politics because they do not have an immediate reason to. There is no tie to the government that causes them to really think about what is going on around them.

Many claim Obama owes his presidency to the millennials. Obama won over the youth vote and had historically high amounts of youth voters vote in his favor.

One Direction releases new album before hiatus

One Direction has conquered the charts in the last five years, now before they disappear for a long deserved hiatus they have released their fifth album.

One Direction, who earlier this year lost band member Zayn Malik, released their fifth album β€œMade In The A.M.” Nov. 13 will mark the end of their activity as a group for two years before they are set to return together in the spring of 2017. There is speculation the band will not return together as a group, many believe that the next to leave the band is Harry Styles, who has been the most talked about since the band became popular in the United States in 2012. He is also said to be the best singer of the group by several different celebrities and music personalities.

After many promises from each boy within the last weeks, they sayΒ they will be back and ready to bring even better music back with them when they return, even hinting in one of their newest songs, β€œHistory” on the album, β€œThis is not the end.” There has been a lot of hype and anticipation for the album, as many promos were made for the new album and several songs were released weeks and months in advance.

Three songs were released the week of the album release. The album is said to be named β€œMade in the A.M.” because when the songs were in production, they would spend the entire night and well into the morning to write and produce the songs.

There are 13 songs on the regular album and 17Β songs on the “Made In The A.M. Deluxe Album.” Several songs were released in anticipation for the album, along with a single that is not part of the album and was released in the United Kingdom. as part of EP that was not available in the United States. The songs on the album include β€œHey Angel,” β€œDrag Me Down,” β€œPerfect,” β€œInfinity,” β€œEnd of the day,” β€œIf I Could Fly,” β€œLong Way Down,” β€œNever Enough,” β€œOlivia,” β€œWhat a Feeling,” β€œLove You Goodbye,” β€œI Want to Write You a Song,” β€œHistory.” The deluxe album includes four other songs, β€œTemporary Fix,” β€œWalking In The Wind,” β€œWolves,” and β€œA.M.”

One Direction has produced five albums in five years and has won numerous awards. All albums went to number one in the matter of minutes. Though their audience is mostly teens ages 12 to 21, they have managed to capture the hearts of millions of girls all over the world. Girls flocked them whenever they leave their homes and they have been able to sell out venues in Europe in minutes. Their second world tour, “Take Me Home,k” sold out in minutes in England.

β€œMade In The A.M.” will be the first album not going to be performed on stage in a concert venue, because of One Direction’s hiatus in the summer of 2016. One Direction has had a huge success in the music industry and β€œMade In The A.M.” will be no exception. β€œMade In The A.M.” is available now for download and anywhere music is sold.
