Disney measles outbreak spreads across America

A thought to be “eliminated” disease has resurfaced and is spreading outbreaks quickly from country to country. Measles is a disease known as a “horrible, painful, bright red-raised rash,” and is more well known to older generations.

This disease was thought to be eliminated 15 years ago, but that has not been the case these past three years with little known cases, and now, major surfacing outbreaks. The recent outbreak has been traced back to cases in Northern Nigeria and Disney Land in California.

Measles is a skin rash known to start on ones waist and then spread to one’s whole body. It makes one itch and then when itched, the rash hurts and bleeds.

There is no cure or treatment, just a vaccine,.

Data from “World Health Organization” informs us that there has been a huge decrease of immunization in several countries including Canada, Denmark, Belgium and Spain, meaning not as many people are getting the vaccination for this disease.

Since there is no cure for measles there is an extra importance of making sure that people have received the vaccination. Sometimes parents disagree with childhood immunization because many people believe that these vaccines cause mental illness like Autism. The vaccine is not required for children, although it is well recommended. In fact, most children get the vaccination with their required school shots.

The vaccine for Measles was first available in 1963, a little after the first outbreaks of the disease spread.

Statistics show that in 1950, 319,124 people had measles. In 1960, 441,703 people were reported with Measles and in 1970, 47,351 people were reported with it.

From data of 2014, the Philippines had the most cases of Measles compared to any other country. A group of Amish missionaries who came back to Ohio from visiting the Philippines infected 383 people.

In 2014, there was one outbreak and 103 cases in the U.S. In 2015, there has only been one breakout in Disneyland, California, with little cases in other states in the U.S.

The outbreaks of Measles are currently taking place in Nigeria and California. It has been studied that the majority of these cases are in children of families that have not been vaccinated. With this data it is important to make sure that oneself has at least looked into weather or not they have been vaccinated.

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown found unresponsive

Bobbi Kristina Brown is the highly known daughter of the late performer Whitney Houston and was recently found unresponsive in the bathtub of her Georgia home.

The situation was called in by Brown’s husband and one of his friends as they found Brown unconscious in the tub.

Brown is currently in critical condition and is surrounded by only her immediate family as her father asks for the media to respect their privacy said a source to Entertainment Tonight.

The incident was frighteningly similar to the incident that killed her mother three years earlier. Although sources have said the situation was not an attempt on her life, other sources have claimed that the similarity to Houston’s death was “no coincidence.”

Although police have searched Brown’s home and investigated further, there has been no proof or sign of any drug or alcohol related abuse. Therefore, the police are considering the it as a medical incident.

Upon being admitted to the hospital, Brown was placed into a medically-induced coma. Despite slight eye movement, which has not proved any improvement to her condition, Brown remains in the medically-induced coma. Doctors began to wean Brown off of the sedatives, but decided it would be a better idea to keep her in the induced coma.

There is no certainty on Brown’s recovery nor the possible death of Brown; however her family is “hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst,” until further updates on the health and stability of Brown.

Barack Obama addresses education and cyber security

On Jan. 23rd beginning promptly at 9:06pm, President Barack Obama made his way down the aisle of the Capitol building, thus beginning The State of the Union.

The State of The Union Address is an annual, formal speech made by the president to Congress as well as the rest of the viewing nation. Within this one-and-a-half to two-hour address, the president takes careful time to note the progress made by the country in the past year as well as the aspirations for the upcoming year.

2015 marks the second-to-last State of the Union for President Obama but despite the end of his second term as president coming to a close, he has shown no less enthusiasm about where he intends to lead the country.

Topics in this year’s address included relations with Cuba, cybersecurity and the war on terror. Though, it was President Obama’s proposal of free community college that has sparked the interest of many young people.

“Two out of three jobs require some higher education,” said President Obama.

With the average fees for attending a public university averaging around twenty-thousand dollars, the threat of student debt has discouraged many from obtaining a higher education. Regardless of the impact a four-year degree could make on a person’s job outlook, the financial risk has proven too great for some families.

Obama’s initial proposal included that free community college would be guaranteed to citizens wishing to obtain a higher education. In short, a person’s income should not make a person feel limited.

The counterarguments to the president’s proposal have been incredibly abundant. Questions are already being raised about where the funding for these free colleges will come from. Above all, it seems Congress is in disapproval of  the notion and are unlikely to pass it but the necessity for change is, at least, being acknowledged.

Knowledge of the past always helps to prevent ignorance about the future. When Brown v. The Board of Education, a case that challenged the lawfulness of segregated schools, passed in 1954, African-Americans were given easier access to public education and greater opportunities for succeeding in life. To parallel this case with recent debate, the access to free community college can give those who cannot afford to go to college greater opportunities to succeed professionally.

The new discrimination in the education system, it seems, is based on income. Free education, while not the only option for low-income students, will make higher education an option for low-income high school graduates.

Attacks in Ferguson disrupt daily life

Events taking place in Ferguson, Arkansas have been making headlines in newspapers all over the United States for the past month.

Ferguson held a candlelight vigil to honor Brown on Aug. 10, which began as a peaceful memorial, but soon turned into a violent protest.

That night, USA stated that more than a dozen businesses were vandalized and looted and over

30 people were arrested that night, along with 2 cop injuries.
On Aug. 11, the first day of school was cancelled for safety of the children that could be walking that day. A large amount of death threats in relation to the shooting of Brown were said to be received by the police.

USA said Brown’s mother released a statement that day stating, “I would not want them to get out there and use my son’s situation for their personal violence. That is not what I want them to do. We are out there marching for justice for my son and peace for my family.”

Although the parents of Brown told the public they did not want their son’s death to be the cause for rioting, rioting continued to break out in Ferguson.

Along with Brown’s mother, President Barack Obama also spoke about the events in Ferguson to the public.

“I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to the remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds,” Obama said.

On Aug. 24, Brown’s funeral was held where over 100 friends and family members gathered to view his body. The family hoped for peace on this day.

“All I want is peace while my son is being laid to rest,” Michael Brown Sr. said.
Sept. 26 was the day Officer Darren Wilson testified before the grand jury.
On Oct. 10, a four day peaceful protest began during the investigation of Brown’s death.
Waiting for the grand jury’s decision, Brown Sr. preaches peaceful protest while the people wait for the outcome.

An advocacy group, St. Louis Forward, posted a video featuring Brown’s father continuously saying that violence is not the answer no matter what happens. The decision was made by the grand jury on Nov. 24, declining indictment of the shooting and killing of Brown.

Despite what Brown’s father said, the protests have continued after the decision by the jury.
According to NBC News, the President plans to meet with young civil rights leaders, politicians, and law enforcement from around the country to build trust between the community and the police.

President Barack Obama said, “Recent events in Ferguson, Missouri and around the country have shone a spotlight on the importance of strong, collaborative relationships between local police and the communities they protect and serve.”
