Natural disasters sweep through west

By:Β Chelsea Kirk / Staff Writer

During the 2017 fall semester natural disasters have demolished and taken a toll over the North-Western hemisphere. These powerful catastrophes have left thousands of people without homes, power and everyday resources.

Β Β Β Β Hurricane Harvey was the first colossal storm to submerge the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding states at the end of August. Harvey was classified as a Category 4 storm, just prior to slamming into Houston. Many coastline cities were left devastated after Harvey passed, leaving several feet of rain behind. Luckily, many organizations including the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, have been helping distribute supplies and providing aid to those who have been impacted.

Β Β Β Β Soon after Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma crashed into the Caribbean islands and Florida in early September. Irma had a tremendous amount of strength, which measured up to be a Category 5. Many civilians were left without power, which resulted in a loss in communication with family. Irma weakened extremely slowly, still a Category 3 by the time the eye of the storm hit central Florida.

Β Β Β Β On September 19, a 7.1 magnitude quake left Mexico City and surrounding areas in ruins. More than 200 fatalities were confirmed by this deadly earthquake and many more injured. This quake was not even the worst of it. A few days prior, an 8.1 magnitude quake hit Mexico, which is the strongest earthquake in approximately a century to have hit the country. Civilians as far as Guatemala and Mexico City felt this quake, even though the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, 75 miles away from the coast.

Β Β Β Β These natural disasters are showing no signs of stopping, while Hurricane Maria stirs in the Atlantic, also reaching a Category 5.

Β  Β  Β Hundreds of lives and homes were lost due to these relentless events. Individuals from around the globe have been donating and providing help to all of the civilians affected. The relief efforts give the survivors hope that someday, they will return to their normal lives and forget about these past tragedies.

NFL athletes kneel as a protest against President Trump

Β By: Elora Nicholas / Staff Writer

Β  Β  Β NFL players throughout the past week have been dealing with the wrath of President Trump. Trump has been giving speeches and has been speaking his opinion about the kneeling of the players.

Β Β Β Β The first player to kneel during the national anthem was Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick has said he sat and kneeled during the anthem because he refuses to show honor to a country that oppresses black people and people of color. His action caused much controversy among fans and others not impacted by the NFL.

Β Β Β Β In recent news, players have started doing this action again for the same reasons stated before. This past Sunday the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and many other teams showed their stand against their right.

Β Β Β Β Throughout the league, players, coaches and owners decided what was best for the team.

Β Β Β Β Trump took to Twitter to say the kneeling was unacceptable.

Β Β Β Β President Trump has been expressing his viewpoint towards the players’ behavior. He believes players who disrespect the flag should be fired from their team. However, he supported those players who chose to lock arms due to the showing of β€œsolidarity.”

Β Β Β Β The Oakland Raiders offensive line is the only line in the NFL made up entirely of African-American players, all chose to kneel during the national anthem joined by their team. The team hosting, Washington Redskins, chose to link arms on their side of the field. The act was shown as one of the strongest visual display of a protest today.

Β Β Β Β Coach Jack Del Rio of the Raiders said the players would have rather stayed in the locker room, but it would have likely delayed game time.

Β Β Β Β All protests were a viewing of solidarity against the criticism of President Trump.

Β Β Β Β The players within each team had their own personal view of why they knelt during Sunday’s game. Most of their opinions all looped back around to their disagreeing with the president. Each player felt that if they would have stood, it would have shown support towards Trump.

Β Β Β Β Some players even chose to celebrate a touchdown in a certain way. Odell Beckham Jr. raised his fist after scoring, a protest done by black athletes dated back to the 1960s.

Β Β Β Β The controversy of this situation continues to expand day by day, what will our president say next? Will the players continue these actions? Viewers will see as the season continues.Β

The Fate of the Furious movie review

By: Mandy Grimm / Staff Writer

Β Β Β Β The movie was full of action and outbursts of unexpected happenings. I would definitely recommend this movie to others that like action and comedy movies.

Β  Β  Β This movie is the eighth of the series and the other seven movies are all creative and have lots of details. The movies is about people who like to race fast cars and use their talent to help the city become a better and safer place. They may do a couple of illegal things here and there but all in all they are great movies.

Β  Β  Β In this last movie The Fate of the Furious the main character Dom is recruited to the enemy side and is taunted by his baby that he did not know he had. He is not allowed to have his baby until he does everything his bosses tell him to do.

Β  Β  Β  His ex-teammates are all very confused why Dom is now going against them. Some parts of the movie that I did not like were when Cipher the main evil hacker killed many people for no reason whatsoever. She was the person behind all of the harsh activity that her and her crew were doing.

Β  Β  Β The main rampage of the movie was over a nuclear bomb that both teams wanted one team was to do good with it and the other wanted to harm lots of people with it. There is also a part where they are all driving their cars on ice and the bad guys are on a submarine that is breaking the ice. The submarine blows up and none of the ice melts. I thought that was weird because when it’s super hot ice melts, but the ice did not melt at all.

Β  Β  Β The parts of the movie that gave me the most joy was when Shaw a friend of Dom’s captured the baby and put headphones on him while he was fighting the bad guys and the baby was just smiling the whole time because he could not hear any of the battle. I also enjoyed when Dom finally got to hold his baby for the first time he was a really, and when their whole friend group that they call a family was together at last with Dom and everyone else, happy and enjoying themselves.

Β  Β  Β All of the actors are incredibly gifted. I think that the movie could use a little help on when someone that was close to the group dies to show the group’s emotions and how they are reacting to death. The producers are very good at the car action scenes. The way the actors drive the cars makes it seem like they have been doing it all their lives especially when it shows them using the different foot pedals and gears.

I Wrote This For You book review

By: Mya Cannon / Editor

Β Β Β Β Β Β I Wrote This For You is a story written by an anonymous author who goes by pleasefindthis. The book is a collection of 186 different short poems divided into four different groups: sun, moon, stars and rain.

Β Β Β Β The book’s description gives you a preview of how emotional it will be. Β The description starts out with,

Β Β Β Β β€œI need you to understand something. I wrote this for you. I wrote this for you and only you.” This line creates not only mystery and suspense but it also creates a feeling of sympathy for the author from the reader.

Β Β Β Β Β The author relates all of the poems he or she has written in I Wrote This For You back to the one person they want to read this book. Β They call this person β€˜you’. The author says in the description,

Β Β Β Β β€œEveryone else who reads it, doesn’t get it. They may think they get it, but they don’t,” I think this shows the personal meaning behind the book and how each poem can mean something different to each person that reads them.

Β Β Β Β Each poem seems to tell a short story of heartbreak and regret, a poem from the book is called Β β€˜The Skeletons In The Sea’,Β β€œTruth is the last thing I can take because it’s the last thing you took.”

Β  Β  Β One of the main feelings I get from this poem is sorrow because what I think it means is that someone lied to the author right before they left him or her.

Β Β Β Β All of the poems in I Wrote This For You Β have very deep meanings to them, even though most of the poems are only one or two sentences, occasionally there is a poem that is a couple of paragraphs long.

Β Β Β My favorite poem from I Wrote This For You is called β€˜The Children Of Time’, a line from this is,

Β Β Β Β β€œSunday knows she’s the end. But she closes her eyes, and she pretends with all the strength in her tiny heart that really, she’s the dawn.”

I believe that this line shows that even when you know something probably will not end up going right in a situation you should still have hope because you really do not know for sure how something will turn out in the end.

Β Β Β Β Β Overall I Wrote This For You is a really great book that everyone should read.
