Hozier Concert

Shea Sullivan

Β Β Β Β Coming off the release of his latest album β€œWasteland Baby!” Irish singer Hozier has rocked concert venues around the country.Β

Β Β Β Β Β On Thursday, Nov. 7, Hozier performed in front of a sold out crowd at the Akron Civic Theatre, his first appearance in the northeast Ohio area since the LaurelLive music festival last June. Hozier is one of the last performances of the year at Akron Civic, before their busy season of holiday performances and festivities begin.

Β Β Β Β Β Opening for the night was Australian singer Angie McMahon. McMahon, who released her first album earlier this year, β€œSalt,” played songs β€œIf you call,” β€œPasta,” β€œAnd I Am a Woman,” a cover of β€œHelpless” by Neil Young and her most popular song β€œSlow Mover.”

Β Β Β Β Β Before performing, McMahon took a moment to pay respect to the Indigenous people of the land, a value she carries with her from Australia. This was her first trip to Akron, and she has been able to get her name out there since she has been a part of the β€œWasteland, Baby!” tour.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œIt has been such a privilege to play in a studio [venue] this beautiful in front of such a great crowd,” McMahon said.Β

Β Β Β Β Β As the night went on, Hozier eventually made his appearance on stage. Opening with β€œAs it was,” he continued the night playing songs such as β€œDinner & Diatribes,” β€œJackie and Wilson,” β€œFrom Eden,” β€œNina Cried Power,” a cover of β€œAs” by Stevie Wonder, crowd favorite β€œAlmost (Sweet Music)” and many more.

Β Β Β Β Β Hozier performed song both off of his latest and first album. Graphics were displayed behind him on stage for every song, and colorful lights with patterns were projected throughout the theatre. Each song had a different type of light which ultimately matched the mood of the song.Β Β Β Β

Β Β Β Β Β While the lights added to the excitement and atmosphere, Hozier made sure this concert carried an impactful message. β€œNina Cried Power” was performed with a video of protests and demonstrations around the world. Hozier referenced the current Hong Kong and Moscow protests, stating the importance of speaking up and creating a positive change in the world.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Hozier announced that he is working on new music and hopes to release it within the next few months. His new music will match the instilled theme of his concerts: protesting and activism. He performed a new song that has not yet been released called β€œJack Boot Jump.”

Β Β Β Β Β Along with other songs he is hoping to release soon, Hozier hopes β€œJack Boot Jump” will act as marching music that encourages people to stand up for what they believe in.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Ending the night and building off the message of activism and protesting, Hozier sang his most well known song β€œTake me to Church.” This song was performed with the music video playing in the background, which depicts an LGBT couple kissing, and then being attacked by a religious mob.

Β Β Β Β Β Although Hozier’s newer music will have an obvious theme of activism, showing the injustices in the world has been based in his art since his career took off.

Β Β Β Β Β For the encore, Hozier came on stage to perform songs β€œCherrywine” and finally β€œWork Song.” Though the Akron Civic Theatre is not a typical place for big artists like Hozier to perform β€” compared to venues like Quicken Loans Arena, and the Wolstein Center in Cleveland β€” Hozier loved the intimate atmosphere the theatre created.Β

Β Β Β Β Β β€œI think this venue was a good choice, it really matches the whole Hozier vibe. More artists should come to Akron because the Civic is such a cool place,” attendee Lili Culley said.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Many may not think of Akron as a big music city, but with musicians such as James Ingram, Devo and The Black Keys all from Akron, the city certainly has roots of its own. Hozier even credited Akron artists for boosting his interest to create music.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œThere’s a huge amount of musical talent coming out of Akron. I was very encouraged as a teenager hearing music from Akron like Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney [The Black Keys],” Hozier said.

Β Β Β Β Β While Hozier could not stay until Sunday morning to take the crowd to church, he brought his uplifting and moving music to the city for a fun night, with a powerful meaning.Β Β

Luke Bryan Concert Review

Ashley Hutchinson

Β  Β  Β Saturday, September 14, was a busy day at Blossom Music Center. Country singer Luke Bryan made an Ohio appearance while on his Sunset Repeat tour.Β

Β Β Β Β Β The concert was said to start at 7 pm, but Bryan did not make an appearance until around 9:30. Instead, the audience watched the opening acts perform. The two opening acts included Jon Langston and Cole Swindell, both of whom are also country singers.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Blossom Music Center was designed to hold about 23,000 people, and every single ticket to this concert was completely sold out.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Jon Langston was a decent opening act, but most of the audience was not familiar with his music. Cole Swindell, however, was a big hit among the crowd because his songs seemed to be more well-known.Β

Β Β Β Β Β β€œI enjoyed one of them, Cole Swindell, but not the other one because I did not know his music that well,” junior Hayley Kohler said after attending the concert.

Β Β Β Β Β Overall, the concert was an amazing experience. β€œI enjoyed it because I knew all of the songs that he performed,” Kohler said.

Β Β Β Β Β Bryan’s set list was around 23 songs long and included crowd favorites such as β€œKnockin’ Boots”, β€œThat’s my Kind of Night” and β€œSunrise, Sunburn, Sunset”.Β

Β Β Β Β Β My personal favorite was β€œKnockin’ Boots” because it is his most recent song and it was the most popular among the audience. It was such a cool experience when every single person knew the song and had a blast dancing to it.

Β Β Β Β Β The concert production was done very well and no improvements were needed there. All of the acts ran smoothly and each of the performers did a wonderful job.Β

Β Β Β Β The only negative, for me personally, is that he did not perform a few of the songs I really like. However, this was balanced out because I discovered new songs that I had never heard before and I came to love them just as much.

Β Β Β Β Β I would definitely attend one of his concerts again. It was so much fun and was a very memorable experience for me. His next concerts will also include new songs, which will be a good change.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Luke Bryan’s Sunset Repeat tour was a concert that I will never forget.Β

Post Malone Album Review

Brianna DoctorΒ

Β Β Β Β Β Nearly a year after releasing his second album, Post Malone has finally released his newest 17 track album, Hollywood’s Bleeding, for his fans who have long awaited new music from the talented artist.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Since July, Malone has been teasing his fans with new music. He released his top hit β€œGoodbyes” featuring Young Thug, and a week before releasing his album, Malone dropped one more song β€œCircles” to give his fans a little taste of what was to come on Hollywood’s Bleeding.

Β Β Β Β Β Malone has been entertaining people with his music since 2016 when he released his first album, Stoney. Two years later he released his second hip-hop based album, beerbongs and bentleys.Β

Β Β Β Β Β For years, Malone has been known for being a hip-hop artist, but his newest album is more pop-focused this time around. Hollywood’s Bleeding contains many sentimental songs that fans listening can relate to.Β Β Β

Β Β Β Β Β With songs like β€œA Thousand Bad Times’ and β€œAllergic”, Malone gives his audience some energetic beats while singing about his relationship issues.

Β Β Β Β Β Malone is no stranger to heartbreak, and through a beautiful pop collaboration with SZA called β€œStaring at the Sun”, he describes a troubled past relationship in which his lover is blinded by her thoughts that Malone can change, but this will never happen.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Through another more down to earth collaboration about heartbreak, Malone describes the feeling of betrayal from a past lover in the song β€œDie For Me” featuring Future and Halsey.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Although Malone’s new album is more pop, he still includes his hip-hop roots through a couple of songs that feature collaborations with rap artists, DaBaby, Lil Baby, and Meek Mill.Β

Β Β Β Β Β In his song β€œOn the Road”, Malone, Lil Baby, and Meek Mill explain all the ups and downs they go through by themselves while creating their music. Next, Malone sings about his β€œEnemies.” He explains how his friends who had let him down turned into his enemies with rapper DaBaby.Β

Β Β Β Β Β In his previous album, Malone let his fans know that he was not afraid to flex his success. In Hollywood’s Bleeding, he still sings about his fame, but this time, in his new pop style..

Β Β Β Β Β Malone sings about all of the things he has, and how he has worked so hard to receive those things in the song β€œSaint-Tropez.” In addition, Malone sings about how he does whatever wants so he can be whatever he wants in β€œI’m Gonna Be.”

Β Β Β Β Β Malone’s best collaboration may come as a surprise to listeners. In his song β€œTake What You Want”, Malone creates a perfect balance of heavy metal and hip-hop with artists, Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott, as they sing about a toxic lover.

Β Β Β Β Β Only 2 days after releasing his newest album, Malone has taken over song charts on both Apple Music and Spotify.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Malone also announced his new Hollywood’s Bleeding merchandise: t-shirts in multiple colors with multiple designs, sweatshirts, and CD’s. His merchandise is available at www.shop.postmalone.com.Β

Β Β Β Β Β In support of his newest album, Malone kicks of his Runaway Tour Sept. 14, and the tour will run through Nov 20. He will be accompanied by Swae Lee and Tyla Yaweh.

Β Β Β Β Β For most Post Malone fans, his newest album is on repeat, but for those who have not listened to his amazing new music, it is now available to stream on all music outlets.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Hollywood’s Bleeding is an album with music different from the typical hip-hop rhythms Malone is known for, yet he has successfully made an album full of songs that contain deeper meanings for fans to relate to while creating catchy tunes to keep listeners coming back for more.

Five Feet Apart Movie Review

Cori Van Orman

IMDb rating: 7.1/10

Personal rating: 8/10

Β Β Β Β 5 Feet Apart was a very touching movie about cystic fibrosis patients. CF patients are not supposed to get too close to each other.

Β Β Β Β Stella, a CF patient has a hospital visit where she has to stay and work on her regime. Her best friend, Poe, also has CF and they can hang out as long as they take the appropriate steps and keep their distance.

Β Β Β Β Stella meets Will, a cystic fibrosis patient with a lung bacteria issue. Nurse Barb, Stella’s favorite nurse, tells her to stay away from him so that she does not get the fungus.

Β Β Β Β She cannot stay away from him and is very attracted to him. They get very close and it causes a lot of problems in the long run.

Β Β Β Β Over time, as Stella and Will get closer, Nurse Barb finds out and tries her hardest to put an end to it.

Β Β Β Β The kids take a stand against their disease and try to fight for the relationship and feelings they have for each other.

Β Β Β Β This movie envokes many emotions. It has happy moments of romance, love, passion, and overall happy events. However, this movie is sad and hard to watch at times. These kids are faced with death and illness and the inability to hug each other due to the shared disease.

Β Β Β Β It is incredibly hard to imagine a life where someone cannot hug their best friend. It is hard for them to sit around and take treatments and pray for a new set of lungs every so many years.

Β Β Β Β Doctors, nurses, and CF families have gone to see 5 Feet Apart. Although they agree the movie is touching and sweet, some of the events do not match with real CF events. Some of the facts do not align with real life, but overall everyone can agree the movie has a great message and meaning and is worth everyone’s time to go see.
