Students do not receive enough free time

Β  Β  Β Eight hours of sleep, seven hours of school, five hours of work, two hours of homework and one hour of studying, leaving one hour of free time. That is just a normal day for a high school student.

Β  Β  Β As the years go on, teens are expected to gain more responsibilities. Nothing out of the ordinary, but with all that is already going on in a teens life, things can get overwhelming.

Β  Β  Β Students have to get to bed on time to make it through the day, which leads to staying up late to finish homework they could not finish earlier.

Β  Β  Β Some students find themselves hurrying to get their homework done the second they get home, before rushing off to work to earn the money they need for being able to go out with friends on the weekend or gas money for driving to and from work and school every day. Teens need this free time with friends to relieve the everyday routine they go through during the week.

Β Β Β Β Β Nowadays, doctors, teachers and counselors, are stressing the impacts of mental health on teens. How can one student balance so much at once and yet still avoid depression or getting overwhelmed. Β

Too much is expected of someone so young, who is still trying to figure out what they want to do in the future or if they want to go to college.

Β Β Β Β Β Some teachers give out more work to do at home than is done in class, which is unfair to a student who spends so much time listening to lectures and being handed quizzes and tests during the day.

Β  Β  Β Honors and AP classes build up too, but students take the classes whether they can handle them or not because the expectations of getting good grades are so frequently pushed upon them.

Β Β Β Β Β A buildup of homework puts the student behind and they begin to get lost in the curriculum and do whatever they can to keep their grades up, even if they are not completely comprehending the material given to them. The student is then no longer learning as they should be.

Β Β Β Β If teachers were to limit or not give any homework to their students, teens would be able to handle all the stress in their life much easier, because being a teen in general is hard enough as is.

Β  Β  Β Homework stress can cause a student to lose motivation all together and give up. It is possible teachers might just be expecting too much of their students.

The Mandela Effect

Β Β Β Β It is a common occurrence for people to remember small differences in a different way. This occurrence is so common it has been given the title of the mandela effect.

Β Β Β Β The mandela effect is said to take place when there is a large number of people who clearly remember an event or object in a way that is untrue.

Β Β Β Β The mandela effect was created and named after an incident where a large group of people all recalled the memory of Nelson Mandela passing away 30 years earlier than he actually did. Many people remember him dying in the 1980s, but his true death date took place 2013.

Β Β Β Β There are theories that explain the vivid, but incorrect, memories that are recognized by so many people.

Β  Β  Β One of these theories being that there are different universes and the human races is being switched between them. This theories state that there is a parallel universe lined up with our universe that we are being switched back and forth unknowingly between multiple times throughout a lifetime.

Β  Β  Β A large number of people remember incorrect things so vividly because these memories that they are having of an event came from a different universe than the one that they are currently in.

Β Β Β Β Another, and one of the most popular, examples of the mandela effect is The Berenstain Bears being spelt as The Berenstein Bears. Some individuals are certain that the books were spelt as The Berenstain Bears but if one was to look at a physical copy of the book they would find that their memories of the spelling are incorrect.

Β Β Β Β A psychological explanation of the mandela effect is that memories are not solid things and can become easily manipulated by things such as beliefs and imagination.

Β Β Β Β Β Seeing as how that The Berenstain Bears was a popular show for children, it is likely that while growing older the spelling of a book was not what children once believed it to be. Young children cannot read or write, so there is a chance that hearing the name of the books caused some to believe that the book’s title was spelt how it sounded.

Fast food is not beneficial to teenagers

Many students find themselves at a struggle to figure out what they want to eat. Most of the time, they turn toward food they can receive extremely fast and buy at a low cost. Known as fast food, this industry makes a fortune off of high school students.

A leading cause in fast food consumption comes from the availability of the amount of restaurants. From one’s house to the school in which he attends, there are numerous fast food restaurants which have Β a variety of different types of food.

Restaurants located in high traffic areas tend to receive more business. The reason behind this may seem obvious, but what people do not know is that teenagers accumulate a lot of profit for the restaurants.

Students can get fast food on their way home from school. This makes franchises eager to be able to place their restaurant near a high school because they know that teens will somehow be persuaded to eat frequently at that location.

Friends can suggest to meet up at places and hang out while grabbing a quick bite to eat. This makes the burden of spending money repeatedly on food less harsh than it normally is. Students often find themselves meeting fellow classmates up at a restaurant and studying for an upcoming test or just to talk about school.

β€œSince Moe’s is right around the corner, my friends and I go there after school sometimes and hang out and eat,” sophomore Thomas McLaughlin said.

Another reason why teenagers find themselves out to eat is because of the fact that many do not know how to cook a proper meal. Other than using the microwave, toaster, and oven, most teens are too lazy to make a home cooked meal.

Students’ lack of knowledge in the kitchen can lead to many more problems than spending money. Over consumption of fast food will eventually lead to obesity, which then leads into many more health problems, and eventually death. Not to say fast food is not good for a change, but students should try and become more educated in the kitchen so they will not be dependent on fast food later in life.

In high school, a health class could be implemented to discuss the effects of overconsumption of fast food because when the problem arises that one eats too much junk food, he might not be able to see that in himself, and would need someone or something else to help identify the problem. Β

Fast food may be fast, but down the road, the one eating too much fast food may not be fast anymore. Β

Spotify should be unblocked on school wifi

By Mya Cannon

Music is a big part of people’s lives today. Songs are listened to while in the car, working out, during the school day or when someone is bored.

Buying music may be very expensive as purchasing music off of iTunes can be anywhere from 99 cents to $1.29 per song.

Apps such as Spotify allow one to listen to any music they want for free. If one chooses to download Spotify to listen to music, the music will be interrupted by ads. People will only be able to listen to music on shuffle, and the songs cannot be listened to unless one is connected to wifi or using cellular data.

Spotify has the option for one to join a premium membership. The first 30 days are free but after that it cost $9.99 every 30 days after the free trial is up.

With Spotify premium one can β€œdownload” music so it can be listened to without a connection to wifi. Any song can be played at anytime the listener chooses, and there is an unlimited number of times one can skip a song.

Many students listen to music as they are walking in the hallways to their different classes or when there is free time during a class period.

Sitting in a silent classroom can be boring, so many people turn to music to break the silence of the room. Music may also help some students focus on the item they are working on, such as homework.

The high school has the Spotify app blocked so one can only listen to their music on the app if they have purchased Spotify premium or are using cellphone data.

A wide variety of people use music to help relieve the stress they are under, and they may not be able to afford purchasing a song off of iTunes, so they turn to a free music app like Spotify.

Students who do not have Spotify premium cannot listen to music throughout the school day unless they are using data on their phone, which can also be expensive if one does not have unlimited data.

By unblocking the Spotify app on the high school’s wifi stress could be reducedΒ and they will potentially help save students the money they are spending to be able to listen to their music during the school day.
