The Kandy Kane Express Holiday Festival hosted by the Dane Foundation came to the Stow City Hall Council Chambers on Sunday, December 7. The event featured a mini christmas tree display and auction, along with cookie,stocking and hat decorating. There were characters including Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Anna, Elsa and Olaf from Disneyβs frozen, Kandy the Kandy Kane,the Ghostbusters and Rudolph made an appearance to take pictures with children. The festival also included The Elf shoppe, which had items for both children and adults. βIβm excited to see Kandy The Kandy Kane, and Santa maybe,β 11-year old Jenna said. The activities at the festival included cook
ie making, stocking and hat decorating, ornament making and decorating. Β The cookies were served and sponsored by Smith Dairy. Each activity cost a certain amount of tickets, and all theΒ proceeds went to the Dane Foundation. To get into the festival, patrons were asked to make a donation of everyday toiletry items which included shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, paper towels, etc. All items and donations went to the Dane Foundation. The Dane Foundation tends to the unique needs of individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. Families were able to become an Elf at the Kandy Kane Express Holiday Festival. The festival also supports Project Elf. Project Elf is a fundraiser where families adopt families or individuals with disabilities and buy Christmas presents for them. The Dane Foundation also provides things that are not available through typical support services. The items include toilet paper, hygiene, cleaning, adaptive equipment and household items that offer comfort and enhance the quality of life. The Dane Foundation was named after Dane Edward Moser, who was born with multiple disabilities. His Cerebral Palsy affected his entire life, but he was said to never wallow in it and moved forward. Moser quietly passed away in August of 2009. Moser represents the successes people hope to have in their lives. His story tells of a young man who had overcome obstacles so he could inspire others. The Kandy Kane Express also supported Ms. Wheelchair USA organization on December 7. The Ms. Wheelchair USA Β promotes glamour, self-confidence and community service, celebrating achievements of women with disabilities. Β The Ms. Wheelchair USA organization was founded over 15 years ago as an Ohio-only competition, but has grown to national proportions in 2007 and is continuing to prosper The program provides opportunities for women with disabilities to show off their achievements and to educate and advocate others, while supplying a platform for community service and public decision. The program focuses on women’s abilities not, disabilities. The Ms. Wheelchair USA organization encourages professional advancement and require a public service. The program is not a beauty pageant, but has glamour, phases of competition including professional production numbers, entertainment and public appearances, Β and with crowning on national television. The program is presented by The Dane Foundation. Lowery Lockard, President of the Dane Foundation said, βProject Elf serves five hundred people with disabilities each year.”
Elec Simon inspires students with music
Every year, the high school invites someone to speak to the students. In past years, motivational speakers have included men like Marc Elliot and Jeff Yalden, but this year was like no other.
Self-taught musician, Elec Simon, spent his morning at the high school on Thurs., Oct 16.
Simon began his journey on Broadway, performing with STOMP, a music and theatrical performance combination, when he was just at the age of 22. Simon still occasionally performs with STOMP, marking 2014 as his tenth year working with the musical program. Since then, he has branched out.
Simon travels to schools to send a message to students. He talks less about an βanti-bullyingβ message and more about life itself.
β[Elec] really had a great message. He made us all think about how grateful we should be for the things in our lives and made us all realize that we don’t know what a person’s situation until you really get to know them,β junior Taylor Calvert said.
Simon was inspired by tragedy. When he was 16, he received the news of his best friendβs death. While his name was unmentioned, Simon says he does these presentations in honor of his friend who was bullied into taking his own life.
βKids are mean nowadays, and respect is the number one issue,” Simon said. “Kids are dying and committing suicide, and the kids might get picked on, and they donβt tell the teacher and the next morning they wake up and hear about that kid blowing their brains out. Treat people right. Itβs that simple.”
After working with STOMP full time, Simon made a decision while at a hotel in Lima, Peru.
βI left [STOMP] on my own,β Simon said. βI was like itβs time for me to go to schools and stuff like that so thatβs when I left the show because I felt I had to give back and do something to help these kids.β
Simon reaches out to students with music. It is a way to get people involved and interested in what he is saying.
βI use music as bait to pull the kids in,β Simon said. βLike with the elementary kids, itβs tough…. A lot of people can come in and do assemblies, but… how can you get the kids attention?β
People were definitely intrigued by Simonβs association with music.
β[Elec] was different than any other speaker, which made him entertaining,” sophomore Gianna Flasco said.
Simon spoke about his life, telling stories and playing music. He says everyone should smile and speak nicely to others because kindness could change their mood completely.
βThereβs always going to be someone mad at the world because theyβre mad at their life,β Simon said.
Most students were very pleased by the show Simon put on.
“[Elec was] by far the best speak Stow has had since I have been here,” junior Taylor Calvert said.
Listening to Simonβs message inspired many of the students in several different ways.
βI think he taught us that believing in ourselves gets us extremely far and that you need to not worry about what other people think and just be yourself,β Calvert said.
Simon hopes students will remember not to “let anyone tell you canβt do anything. You want something? Go get it.β
Gym teacher Shaun Fennell shares his secret hobby
Although many students tend to think their teachers do not have a life outside of school, often times teachers have interesting, and unexpected hobbies and talents. The majority of teachers also do not tell their students their secret passions.
Take gym teacher Shaun Fennell, for example, who plays the drums in his free time. Fennell has been playing for a while.
βI have been playing the drums on and off since I was about 5 years old,β Fennell said.
Any musician will say they have a reason or overall inspiration as to why they play music and why they chose the instrument they play. Sometimes, a musicianβs inspiration is based off of personal experiences or important people in their lives.
βI started playing the drums because my dad was in a band and music was always on in my house,β Fennell said. βWe had drums in our basement since the day I was born and have just always been interested in them.β
Playing an instrument is a lifelong skill. Being able to play an instrument will never be unneeded.. There will always be a need for people who can play instruments.
Fennell also said he was inspired and likes to play the drums because he βwill be able to do it [his] entire life, unlike playing football or baseball.β
There are a vast amount of people who are inspired by music to express themselves, so they can express themselves. Most musicians say the only way they know how to express themselves is through playing an instrument.
βI just love that people can express themselves through music,β said Fennell.
Being in bands is common amongst musicians. When a performer is in a band, they often tend to improve often because they practice frequently.βI have never been in a band but would love to one day play at least one song live on stage. Mostly I just play as a hobby to relieve stress and have fun. A buddy of mine who plays the guitar and I have played together. We learned a couple of Metallica songs and can play them pretty good,β said Fennell.
Although being in a band is not necessary, without being in a band, someone can still be a musician and enjoy doing what you do.
Fennell also said, βI would like to eventually be in a band but it is not something that I need to do. I am satisfied just playing every now and then in my basement as a hobby.β
Some players choose to stick to a certain instrument and focus on it. While musicians can play multiple instruments, not all do.
βWhen I was in fifth grade I played the trumpet, but was bored with it and thatβs when I first started taking drum lessons. Like I said before, the drums were always around growing up. I would hear my dad play and I just loved the sound and the beats. I never really had an interest in any other instrument,β said Fennell.
A musicianβs style is the genre or type of music they play the majority of the time. Normally a musician is known for their special style that is usually unique to that specific individual and their style cannot be found anywhere else.
βMy favorite thing to play is a hard rock song or just creating my own beats,β said Fennell.
Musiciansβ styles are often based off their favorite band or artist, song, and genre of music they enjoy listening to. Not only do musicians get their style off of their favorite music inspirations, musicians often pick styles that fit what they like to play.
βMy favorite band growing up was Metallica and Nirvana they were really big in my high school days. My favorite song of all time would have to be One by Metallica. I used to listen to only hard rock growing up. Now as an adult, I listen to many different genres and I am finding new artists that I really like. Right now I am really into Reggae Rock and just recently went to a concert to see one of my new favorite bands,β said Fennell.
The longer someone has been playing a certain instrument, and with the proper amount of practice given, the better the musician will likely be. Although the number of years been playing does not always determine how good someone is at playing that particular instrument.
βIβve taken lessons on and off for about five years. Some when I was younger and some as an adult. Most recently was about three years ago but I had to stop because my first son was born and we started to get really busy as a family. I do plan on taking lesson [again] in the near future,β said Fennell
Even though quantity does not always mean better quality, it often relies on how much the musician practices.
βI would label myself as an okay drummer. I can play pretty much anything as long as I have the time to practice. At this point in my life, I am pretty rusty because I have not played or practiced in a few years, just because I am very busy being a father and husband,β Fennell said.
While being a musician full time and attempting to go professional takes dedication, and luck to succeed in, most musicians have a βbackupβ career or an average job. Most musicians work normal, everyday jobs during the week, and come home and play their instruments on the weekends.
βIn order to be a professional drummer, your entire life would be playing the drums. Growing up I was interested in many different things, like sports, and did not practice or have the drive to dedicate my life to becoming a professional.β Fennell said.
Playing an instrument is not the easiest thing to do, so many admire musicians for that reason. Some students realize how difficult it is to master certain instruments, and admire Fennell for being able to play the drums as well as he does.
βI feel that itβs really cool that he is a drummer, and that means he has great upper body strength,β sophomore Andrew Rodgers said.
Students who are just finding out about Fennellβs unknown hobby are blow away and completely shocked Fennell had not told anyone about his hobby. Fennellβs students had no idea he could play the drum and they completely love it that he plays the drums.
βFennellβs secret hobby is the most amazing thing ever. That just raises his rank on the best teacher ever chart,β sophomore Kayla Haren said.
Face paint in school causes distraction
Zombie-like faces flood the halls as Halloween approaches.
Some Students feel the need to paint themselves Β as zombies or monsters for the school day; however, with the strictly enforced rules of the dress code, many students believe this is a violation of the school rules.
Multiple students at school have received jobs working at haunted houses as a great way to earn money around Halloween time. Many of these jobs include dressing up as the living-dead and doing their best to scare the paying customers. The detailed zombie costumes and elaborate face paint allow for a frightening effect, but these zombies may want to leave their scaring back at the haunted houses.
Section βKβ of the student code of Β conduct states that, βA student shall not dress in an obscene or suggestive manner or in any fashion that, in the judgment of the staff and/or administration, disrupts the educational process. See-through or mesh garments, midriff Β blouses or shirts, tank tops, spaghetti straps, exposure of undergarments of any type, spiked jewelry, chains, cleavage, low riding pants, hats and clothing with obscene or suggestive statements or symbols are prohibited is any apparel that advertises or promotes sex, drugs or alcohol. Shoes must be worn at all times. Coats and hats should be placed in lockers and not worn/carried during the school day.β
The painting of studentsβ faces violates the code of conduct as it, βdisrupts the educational process.β If the motive of the zombie students is to promote their haunted houses, the face painting poses as an educational distraction because the purpose of promoting something is to draw attention to it.
βI have no problem with the kids who paint their faces,” junior Katarina Odak said. “Even if it isnβt Β a promotion for an event, they can do what they want. My problem is that it isnβt considered a βdistraction to anyone’s learningβ. I don’t understand how that is not a distraction, yet when I wore a strapless shirt and showed my shoulders, it apparently prohibited the learning of any male students, for which I deeply apologize.”
To think that girls wearing comfortable tank-tops hold more of a distraction than students who paint themselves as living corpses is absurd.
βI understand and agree that you shouldn’t be allowed to wear shorts that show 70% of your butt or anything ridiculous like that because we are in school and not a strip club, but some of the rules are body shaming and unfair because they βdistract boys from their learningβ,”Β Odak said. “All that does is preach to not be victimized instead of to not victimize. This is a far stretch from the kids painting their faces, but they shouldn’t have been allowed to βdistractβ everyone from learning if everyone else wasn’t allowed to either. Besides, my strapless shirt didn’t make one of my teachers stop teaching multiple times because they lost their train of thought. The same cannot be said for the face paint.”
With the makeup covering all of their faces, some students cannot even be identified without deeper analyzation.
βI donβt see a very big difference between a student hiding their face with paint and a student hiding their face with a ski mask,” junior David Slusser said. “Both are relatively the same thing, except wearing a ski mask would be absolutely unacceptable in the school.”
The face painters claim the action to be one of advertisement for the haunted houses, but there are many other ways they could get their message across rather than being a disturbance to others throughout the day.
If students want to promote their haunted houses, then they should go about so in a way that does not disturb others from learning. If administration is going to let students completely cover their faces in makeup, in a disturbing manner, then they also need to let students wear ball caps and not be forced to wear clothes that completely cover every part their bodies.
βThe fact that the majority of the people were scared and uncomfortable about the face paint probably shouldn’t be ignored either; although, Β I’m no expert on what should or should not be done in the school,” Odak said. “That would fall under the rule of Mrs. Murray, and I don’t encourage nor promote any actions as a result of what I had to say, but I think it’s necessary to question authority when it deserves to be questioned.
