Hide-and-seek with Mr. O’Keefe

On September 21 and October 17, Algebra and Trigonometry teacher Andrew O’Keefe organized hide-and-seek events for high school staff. The goal was to find O’Keefe in the fifteen minutes after school ends between 2:30 and 2:45 for a gift card prize money.

O’Keefe sent out complex clues on the day of the first event, Sept. 21, to staff which alluded to where he was hiding. The clues were written out as follows (answers are included):

The fifth prime / Na / The Texas Chain Saw Massacre = 11/11/1974: Leonardo DiCaprio, actor, auditoriumΒ

Days of Christmas / Bill of Rights / MLK prize = 12/10/1964: Bobby Flay, chef, kitchen

Father of the Constitution / Patrick Mahomes /Β Frederick III crowned = 04/15/1452: Leonardo daΒ Vinci, artist, art room.

O’Keefe explained that he added in the aspect of clues only the night before but it quickly became an integral part of the event.

β€œI wanted to give the locations of where I could potentially be hiding so I did that through famous people. I knew I was going to hide in one of these three spots but I didn’t know which spot I would be able to get to in time and during eleventh period without being seen. I didn’t want someone to watch me go there. There were some teachers who were joking, β€˜I’m going to have a student tail you.’ I wanted to narrow down the search because they only had fifteen minutes and they were sprinting. Teachers were sprinting around the building.” O’Keefe stated.

O’Keefe explained how the new building principal, Amanda Murray, has made school spirit and pride one of her goals this year and he wanted to do something to help boost morale.

β€œMr. Yeagley, one of the new assistant principals, we were talking about fun ideas for the staff to boost morale and school spirit and that was one of the ideas that we discussed, and then I twisted it a little and took it and ran with it,” O’Keefe stated.

Freshman English and creative writing teacher, Emma Walkinshaw was heavily invested in the hide-and-seek event.

β€œI’m way too competitive to let this slide. As soon as I heard we were doing it I was like β€˜Oh bet, I’m one hundred percent participating,’” Walkinshaw expressed.

September 21 event had a prize money amount of 25 dollars in gift cards, but when no one found him hiding underneath Joshua’s kitchen sink, the money doubled and was added to the Oct. 17 event where he hid in the janitor’s closet. This time O’Keefe was found by Jessica Merrill in four minutes.

Jessica Merrill finds Andrew O’Keefe in the janitor’s closet. O’Keefe held two hide-and-seek events for the staff on Sept. 21 and Oct. 17.

Many of the staff were very involved with the clues, even getting students to help decipher and get more information out of O’Keefe.

Colin Martau, an American History and AP World History teacher, expressed, β€œI didn’t even care about the money, I just wanted to solve the riddle.”

Martua spent a lot of time attempting to decode the clues.

β€œAnytime I had that day that wasn’t instructional time with kids whether it was my planning or my lunch, I was legit spending trying to solve these clues because I wanted to be the one to find him,” Martua said.

He also stated that some of O’Keefe’s students were so intrigued by the riddles that they wanted to help him solve them, even going as far as using Trigonometry to decode the clues.

Walkinshaw took a different approach to solving clues, expressing that she β€œtried not to think about what goes through his brain.”

As teachers kept getting information from O’Keefe’s students a rumor spread and they began to think some were being fed false information to make the game more interesting.

O’Keefe cleared up this theory stating, β€œA bunch of classes were working on the riddle and trying to get information out of me throughout the day. I did not lie to anybody.”

A popular strategy many of the staff adopted was splitting up into groups. Both Walkinshaw and

Martau used this approach, as Martau explained, β€œI had multiple groups, I was like on β€˜Survivor’ trying to form alliances, I was working with [Ms.] Kester, I was working with Mr. Budd, I went and talked to Ms. Keyser, and it became a whole competition where we were trying to figure it out.”

Activities like a hide-and-seek can be very beneficial for bringing colleagues together and creating a better working environment, and when the staff has a good working environment it directly translates to the students, and their learning environment.

β€œIt gets us excited for things throughout the day, I think sometimes you get into the routine of school and everything is kind of mundane and that’s true for students too, so having an activity like that would force you to use your brain to solve a puzzle but also be physically active and go around the building trying to find him,” Martua observed.

As Murray set out to achieve this year, the staff morale has been raised just simply from a small event like a staff hide-and-seek.

O’Keefe believed the event was a success, bringing staff together and creating a fun activity to look forward to.

O’Keefe reflected, β€œI thought everyone had a good time with it. It was fun, people were laughing and meeting other teachers who they didn’t even know while they were out running around and searching.”

With O’Keefe not being found in the first event it left staff wanting to find him even more.

Andrew O’Keefe reveals himself to the staff on Sept. 21 after no one found him hiding under a sink in Joshua’s. The prize money from the Sept. 21 event was put toward the Oct. 17 event.

β€œThe fact that I’m way too competitive and the fact that we ended up with him winning. We need someone to find him. If this continues on with no winner I’m going to lose it,” Walkinshaw admitted.

For those hoping events such as the hide-and-seek’s will continue are in luck, because O’Keefe disclosed possible future ideas.

β€œWe have some other things in the works right now. Another idea we’re talking through is a staff scavenger hunt,” O’Keefe suggested

Overall, Martau agreed that these hide-and-seek events boosted staff morale and β€œgave us an opportunity to do something together and collaborate and be excited about something that ultimately was a no-pressure, just have fun situation.”

Masks at Homecoming

Avy Motz / Staff Writer

With Homecoming approaching, many people are wondering what the requirements for masks will be while at the game and dance. While many people have strong opinions on the matter, it is considered a controversial topic.

Β Β Β Β Β Students do not want to wear masks at Homecoming, but understand why they are necessary. Students claim that the masks are uncomfortable and reduce movement, but they tend to agree they should be required in order to prevent further COVID-19 spread.

Sophomore Dakota Starnes described her opinion on wearing masks at Homecoming.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œI don’t want to…  I feel like at the dance you will be hot, you will be sweaty, and wearing a mask would be uncomfortable [at Homecoming],” Starnes said.Β

Β Β Β Β Many students would also understand if masks were mandated, despite the fact they would be very uncomfortable to wear.Β

Sophomore Ben Bordonaro explained why he thought people should wear masks at Homecoming.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œThere are definitely different variants of COVID-19, and we will be within 6 feet of each other,” Bordonaro stated.Β

Β Β Β Β Masks may cause discomfort at Homecoming, but they are necessary in order to keep everyone safe and healthy, and to prevent the spread of COVID-19.Β

Starnes noted her plans if the masks are required for Homecoming.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œDoing exercise while wearing a mask will be uncomfortable,” Starnes added. β€œIf masks are enforced, it will make it more uncomfortable. I will still go, though.”

Β Β Β  High school officials announced on Sept. 14 they will be requiring masks at the Homecoming dance, as well as getting a waiver signed by parents.

Bernie Sanders Drops Out

Tyler Kavalecz

Β Β Β Β Β On April 8, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign and dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary, all but ensuring that former Vice President Joe Biden will be the Democratic presidential candidate.

Β Β Β Β Β Through the first three states that voted in the primary, Sanders was the front-runner after winning in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. At that point Sanders led in delegates with 45, while Biden was in third with 15 delegates, according to the AP.

Β Β Β Β Β Biden stopped Sanders’ momentum in the turning point of the primary on February 29. Biden secured his first win of the primary in South Carolina and closed in on Sanders in delegates with Sanders standing at 60 and Biden jumping up to 54 delegates, according to the AP.

Β Β Β Β Β Biden became the new front runner in the primary on the first, and biggest, Super Tuesday on March 3. Biden won 10 of the 15 states and territories that voted on March 3.Β

Β Β Β Β Β After Super Tuesday, Biden stood at 702 delegates, leading Sanders who was at 618 delegates, according to the AP.

Β Β Β Β Β Biden had full momentum after Super Tuesday and never gave up the delegate lead. When Sanders dropped out of the primary on April 8, Biden had 1,217 delegates, while Sanders was trailing with 914, according to the AP.

Β Β Β Β Β Sanders announced he was suspending his campaign and therefore dropping out of the Democratic presidential primary in a live-streamed speech on Twitter.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œI cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win and which would interfere with the important work required of all of us in this difficult hour,” Sanders said in his live-streamed speech.

Β Β Β Β Β Although he dropped out of the primary and would not be a presidential candidate, Sanders added that his movement is not ending.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œWhile this campaign is coming to an end, our movement is not,” Sanders said in his live-streamed speech.

Β Β Β Β Β On top of stating that his path to victory was virtually impossible because of the delegate lead that Biden had built up, Sanders also congratulated Biden.

Β Β Β Β Β Sanders called Biden β€œa very decent man who I will work with to move our progressive ideas forward,” in his live-streamed speech.

Β Β Β Β Β Sanders also called for Democrats to stand together to help defeat President Trump.

Β Β Β Β Β β€œThen together, standing united we will go forward to defeat Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in modern American history,” Sanders said.

Β Β Β Β Β Although Sanders has officially dropped out of the primary, he will stay on the ballot in the states with upcoming primaries to try to amass more delegates in order to influence the party’s platform at the Democratic convention, which is currently scheduled to take place in August.

Β Β Β Β Β Shortly after Sanders’ live-streamed speech, Biden stated that he would reach out to the Vermont senator and welcomed Sanders followers to join him. Biden said that he would continue dialogue with Sanders and his supporters to move forward on policy goals.

Β Β Β Β Β Biden also acknowledged that Sanders has changed the dialogue and created a movement in America.

Β Β Β Β Β With Sanders dropping out of the race, it all but ensures that Biden will be the Democratic presidential nominee that will face President Trump come the national presidential election later this year.

Β Β Β Β Β Although Biden will not officially become the Democratic presidential nominee until he reaches 1,991 delegates, which is just over half of the total number of delegates that get awarded to candidates throughout the primary.

Β Β Β Β Β On April 13, Bernie Sanders announced on Joe Biden’s twitter live-stream that he would be endorsing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for president.Β

What now for the Disney Trip?

Β  Amanda Ostrowski

Β Stow Munroe Falls High School band trip to Disney was postponed. I feel that the decision made was the right decision to make.Β

Β Β Β Β Β There are alot of kids in the band and the government and Disney does not want us to get the virus or give the virus to other people. Especially because there are a lot of old people down there.Β

Β Β Β Β Β I am glad they decided to postpone the trip and not just cancel it completely because going to Disney was the only reason I joined the band.

Β Β Β Β Β They also probably postponed the trip instead of canceling because the band can only go once every four years and they do not wanna make students and parents unhappy.Β

Β Β Β Β Β There are many band kids that are very upset still by this but I think people are just trying to stop the spreading and trying to protect the students and others safety.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Plus even if the school decided to send us to Disney it is closing anyways so we would not be able to go.Β

Β Β Β Β Β Even though I feel it was the right decision it is sad because of all the work band kids worked. We did extra practices and took time away from concert season to work on the music Disney gave us.Β

Β Β Β Β Β The band directors though really have worked hard to get this trip together and it is sad that all of their work will be postponed to a later time. I am sure they have given up a lot of time to make sure everything was set and to make sure all of the kids would have a great safe time.Β

Β Β Β Β Β I hope the school and the band and the local government can work all of this out and we all still be able to go to Disney World.Β

Β Β Β Β Β As a senior I hope for myself and my classmates that we will go to Disney soon.
