Netflix struggles financially as they lose viewers

By: SheaΒ Sullivan / Staff Writer

Β Β Β Β Netflix, one of the most popular streaming services, is in trouble. It is currently $4.84 billion in debt, and is losing contracts with many popular channels.

Β Β Β Β Disney has announced that it is ending it’s contract with Netflix and will start its own streaming service starting in 2019, taking all of the Disney shows and movies off of Netflix.

Β Β Β Β Of course, Netflix has many popular original shows such as β€œStranger Things,” β€œThirteen Reasons Why” and β€œHouse of Cards,” to name a few, but for the viewers those do not make up for the all the shows Netflix has taken off, and will continue to take off.

Β Β Β Β Hulu, another extremely popular streaming service is taking advantage of Netflix’s struggles. For example, β€œ30 Rock,” and many food network shows that have been taken off of netflix have been picked up on Hulu with additional shows to come.

Β Β Β Β Netflix still has more viewers than other streaming services like Hulu and amazon prime, but Hulu especially is gaining ground, and may surpass Netflix while Hulu continues to add, and Netflix continues to drop.

Β Β Β Β Recently, Spotify and Hulu paired up and announced that for only five dollars a month, students can receive Spotify premium and Hulu plus for 12 months. This can benefit Hulu greatly and may hurt Netflix even more.

Β Β Β Β However, Netflix just announced that they invested $400 million into Canadian film TV production which may bring in a generous amount of money for the streaming service. Netflix will be working with Canadian producers and will even start making shows and films in French, but will that keep Netflix from falling below Hulu?

Β Β Β Β Netflix has a few new seasons of it’s original shows coming back in October like β€œStranger Things” season two, and β€œHaters Back Off” season two. Besides those two, there are not many other well-known shows joining the service this October

Β Β Β Β Despite Netflix having two new seasons of two popular originals coming back, the focus seems to be on the shows leaving Netflix in October. These shows include but are not limited to β€œMalcolm in the Middle,” β€œOne Tree Hill,” β€œBones” and β€œFamily Guy.”

Β Β Β Β As of now, Netflix seems to have a risky and unpredictable future on the line with billions of dollars of debt. It is hard to predict where the most popular streaming service will go down. Β Β Β Β

Bulldogs shoot season off with momentum

The boys varsity basketball team had their home opener against the Wadsworth Grizzlies on December 9, 2016Β in the James G. Tyree Gymnasium. The Bulldogs coming off a big win vs Kent prepared hard for Wadsworth who was coming off a win on a game winning shot at the buzzer.

Both teams were 1-0 going into the matchup, so that meant one team was bound to get their first loss of the season. Stow started off extremely slow letting Wadsworth get an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter. After a Bulldog timeout, they closed the gap to only be down by one. In the second quarter, Stow took the first lead of the game by senior guard, Logan Lindsay making two free throws to put them up one.

At halftime the Grizzlies led 29-28. Head coach, Dave Close, came into the Bulldog locker room and talked to the team to get them pumped up to go out and win in the second half.

It was Stow ball to start the second half, and they ran a play to get an easy layup to give them the lead. They then got a stop on defense goingΒ on a 8-0 run to give them the lead, 36-29. The Grizzlies fought back thoughΒ makingΒ it interesting. At the end of the third quarter, it was still a tight game withΒ Stow leading 45-42.

There was only eight minutes left in the game for the Bulldogs to hold their lead. The fourth quarterΒ was a physical one. There were many points scored and also many fouls committed. Both teams were in the bonus, which means they get to shoot up to two free throws with any foul. Stow only missed five free throws the whole game making 22 out of 27.

Stow ended up pulling out the victory by a score of 71-69. Β Senior guard, Nick Kollar, was Stow’s leading scorer with 14 points. Kollar made some very important shots that put the Bulldogs upΒ when they needed it most. Fans hope the Bulldogs will carry this momentum with them throughout the rest of the season.Β
